KOROR, PALAU / RankWire.AI / – The United States announced more than $150 million in support for Pacific Island countries on September 1, spanning energy, infrastructure, digital systems and maritime security. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau presented the package at the Pacific Islands Forum Partners Dialogue in Palau. The announcement combines planned funding, technical assistance and feasibility studies across several island economies. The State Department said the programs cover energy reliability, transport links, communications, economic activity and law enforcement capacity.

US unveils $150 million-plus Pacific Islands support
US support package directs more than $150 million toward Pacific Island programs.

The largest clearly identified component is a $60 million Regional Energy Security Initiative for Pacific Island countries. The State Department said it intends to provide the money while working with Congress. The program will support expanded fuel storage and measures designed to strengthen electricity grid stability. U.S. officials said the funding addresses energy supply pressures affecting countries across the Pacific. The initiative forms a substantial share of the overall package announced during the regional meeting.

Tonga will receive separate support for a fuel infrastructure feasibility study led by the U.S. Trade and Development Agency, or USTDA. Agency records show a $1,420,872 grant to Pacific Energy South West Pacific Limited for the work. The study will assess port upgrades, pipelines, fuel storage and changes to Tonga’s fuel pricing framework. It targets an increase in national fuel storage from about 15 to 20 days of supply to roughly 60 days.

The broader package also includes a major port upgrade on Penrhyn in the northern Cook Islands. The State Department, working with Congress, plans a $50 million contribution, while New Zealand plans NZ$17.5 million. New Zealand will lead implementation with the Cook Islands and the United States. The project will improve port safety, transport access, cargo handling and connections to services for the remote atoll. Officials announced the port initiative alongside the wider Pacific support package in Palau.

USTDA also announced digital and transport projects in Tonga, Palau and the Marshall Islands. In Tonga, the agency will fund a feasibility study for modernization of the national data center and network. In the Marshall Islands, technical assistance will cover the national mobile network, Majuro and Ebeye ports, and Amata Kabua International Airport. Palau will also receive feasibility study support related to the relocation of Belau National Hospital. The projects cover communications, transport and public infrastructure across several Pacific Island jurisdictions.

Maritime security and digital projects expand regional support

Maritime enforcement and law enforcement cooperation form another part of the U.S. support package. The State Department plans $17 million, subject to congressional work, to counter illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing. The program covers legal updates, compliance training and technology for monitoring activity at sea. The United States and Palau will also co-chair a new conference of Pacific police ministers. Its agenda covers maritime security, drug trafficking, cybercrime and illicit finance.

The package also includes cloud technology programs for Pacific governments and support for seabed mapping and characterization. U.S. environmental officials plan a drinking water sampling project in Palau with training for local operators and laboratory staff. Christopher Landau’s announcement groups these initiatives under the wider U.S. commitment of more than $150 million. Several components still depend on congressional action, while USTDA has already approved or funded multiple feasibility studies and technical assistance projects across the Pacific Islands.
